DESCRIPTION

The Ras Laffan Ethylene cracker to be built in the Ras Laffan Industrial City (RLC), when completed, will be one of the largest ethylene crackers in the world.

The Ras Laffan Olefins Company Limited (RLOC) is a joint venture between Qatar Chemical Company II Ltd. (Q-Chem II)  (53.31%), Qatofin (45.69%), and Qatar Petroleum (1%).

The project comes within an ambitious programs to utilize and develop hydrocarbon resources to ensure optimization and utilization of the country’s resources by setting up oil and gas related projects and, eventually, diversifying sources of income and creating development opportunities.

RLOC will crack ethane supplied from the Al Khaleej and Dolphin gas projects to feed the sponsor’s downstream derivative units. RLOC will produce 1.3 million metric tons per year (mtpa) of ethylene and transport it to Mesaieed via a 120-kilometer dense phase ethylene pipeline to be built by the project. The plant is expected to be operational and start delivering ethylene by the end of 2008.

Qatofin -Q-Chem II’s partner in the ethylene cracker- is a Qapco-Total subsidiary setup to optimize the utilization of ethane gas feedstock that will be available in the second half of this decade. The Qatofin plant, which will be located adjacent to Qapco’s site in Mesaieed, will produce 450,000 mtpa of Linear Low Density Polyethylene (LLDPE).

The EPC contractor for the Ras Laffan ethane cracker is Technip of France
